Post Surgery Supplements
We recommend you start taking the following post surgery supplements or vitamins at least two weeks prior to the surgery: additional vitamin C (1,000 mg to 2,500 mg), bi
Biooflavonoids (1,000 mg), zinc (50 mg), vitamin E in the form of wheat germ oil capsules (50 mg), and a good B-complex (that contains at least 50 mg of pantothenic acid). Also remember that zinc can become toxic if not taken with vitamin A as well as vitamin C, so it would be best to include 20,000 to 25,000 IU of vitamin A daily.
Vitamin C – Vitamin C infusion or having oral ascorbic acid days prior to surgical procedures promotes faster healing. Vitamin C has also been found to decrease pain after surgery, improving outcome and reducing the need for pain medications. However, it is advised to stop vitamin C after surgery if you are having implants as it can cause your body to reject the implant resulting in painful swelling.
Zinc – Increase your zinc intake to 30–50 mg for two weeks before and two weeks after surgery, using zinc picolinate. Zinc is critical to wound healing, and surgery or trauma can decrease the level of zinc in your body. … A probiotic can help counteract these problems, promoting surgery recovery.
Lots of lean protein! – Protein is especially important for clients undergoing any lift, as we want to ensure the skin stays elastic. Clients that stick to strict vegan diets must ensure they up their intake around this time. Alternatively, we love adding collagen protein as its tasteless and has a few extra amino acids in it that traditional whey does not, as well as the bonus of being beneficial for your stomach lining.
Coenzyme Q10 – Coenzyme Q10, produced by the body, belongs to a family of compounds called quinones. Coenzyme Q10 is found in all living creatures and is concentrated in many foods, including nuts and oils. Coenzyme Q10 can be found in a wide range of foods, including olive oil.
It appears to aid healing and reduce pain and bleeding in those with gum disease and to speed recovery after surgery. And is found to play a role in preventing cancer, heart attacks and other conditions linked to free radical damage. It’s also great as a general energy enhancer and anti-ageing supplement. Because levels of the compound diminish with age (and with certain diseases), some doctors recommend daily supplementation beginning at about 40 years of age.
After surgery, a typical dose is 100 to 150 milligrams a day. Before surgery, higher doses may be used; however, consult your health care practitioner. Take this supplement in the morning and evening, preferably with fatty food, to enhance absorption.
Coenzyme Q10 should be continued long term; it may require eight weeks or longer to notice results. Concurrent vitamin B6 supplements may also help.
Research using topical forms suggests they have anti-inflammatory properties. Topical arnica is popularly used to treat bruises and other minor traumatic injuries, and there is some research evidence to support this.
Orally – it’s recommended to follow typical dosage amounts or to consult with your GP before heading overseas.
Greens supplements – (or just lots of dark leafy greens and berries for antioxidants) excellent for keeping your liver and blood clean
Milk thistle (silymarin) – Starting three weeks before surgery, take right up to the day and as soon as possible thereafter. Surgery up to 2 hours: 3 tablets daily, continue four weeks after. Between 2 and 4 hours: 4 tablets daily, continue six weeks after. Longer than 4 hours: 4 tablets daily, continue 2-3 months after.
A couple of days before and after surgery, it would be wise to include at least 1,000 mg twice daily of bromelain (the pineapple extract). It should be taken between meals with a full glass of water. Bromelain is a powerful proteolytic enzyme (meaning it breaks down proteins). In addition to its uses as a digestive aid, its excellent anti-inflammatory effects reduce swelling and bruising, speeding healing and recovery time. Even pineapple in its raw form has been shown to be effective when applied topically to wounds. Bromelain tablets can be purchased at most health food stores.
